My Story

Who am I? I am at heart a birthkeeper - a term that the late Jeannine Parvati Baker created in reference to Birth Workers who are also Earth Keepers (those who value the wisdom of the Earth).  I am committed to remembering the sacred nature of birth and earth and I believe, as Jeannine did, that we can "heal the earth one birth at a time". I believe that in order to dismantle the systems of oppression which plague our world and cause untold harms, we must go back to the beginning  - to birth and to earth.

I attended my first birth in 2003, supporting a dear friend through the complex and early birth of her daughter, which ignited within me a passion for the wellbeing of women & infants in the childbearing year. After 14 years as a doula I stepped away from attending births professionally in order to lessen the strain on my own family, but also to focus on my work as an herbalist and to put more time into writing about birth and parenting issues.

I believe each of us is born with innate knowledge of what is essential to our well-being. All that we need to be happy, healthy, and holy is encoded within. Our bodies know exactly what is right for us and they know exactly how to heal our illnesses, injuries, and issues. On both a cultural and individual level though we have forgotten what we know to be most true; we allow systemic oppression to harm some while granting privilege to others; we accept cheap comforts in place of true nourishment; we pay for quick fixes in place of deep healing. Our intuition and healing ability have been corrupted by systems of belief that make us see ourselves and "others" as inherently toxic or incomplete, and in need of cleansing or rescuing by a hero/expert. We constantly try to fix brokenness and overcome weaknesses, losing sight of the beauty, wonder and strength in our inherent wholeness, gifts, and soul desires. While we do sometimes need to “pull out the big guns” or seek expert assistance, especially to deal with serious issues, illnesses, or injuries - that sort of role is not mine. My goal is to nourish, to nurture, to hold space... so the people I serve can tap into their own wisdom, knowing, intuition, and healing.

I believe all people deserve to loved, and to be treated with kindness and respect. I believe that when we know better we can do better. I believe that systems of oppression which grant privilege to some and harm to others must be consciously identified, rooted out, and healed. I believe that to truly live in our light we must also face our shadow. I believe that you are here - now - for a reason.

In old England, villages ended where the forest began, with a hedge marking the boundary between the two. Just beyond this hedge you would often find a woman living in a small cottage - she was a healer/herbalist, midwife, and a spiritual advisor to her community. In later years these wise women, who tended to walk their own unique spiritual paths and often had a family of their own, were sometimes referred to as hedgewitches because their healing gifts and connections to the spiritual & natural worlds were not understood.

I am a writer, herbalist, and birthkeeper. I am a wife, and an unschooling mother to two boys - one of whom has PDA-Autism (Pathological Demand Avoidance).  I am an omnist. I recognize and respect the beauty and truth in all religions. I am neurodivergent. When going through the diagnostic process with my son I found that I recognized myself in those pages. Kundalini Yoga keeps me grounded and growing. I am a beginner, but my soul feels at home when I connect to the golden chain. Our family and my business began in a small one bedroom home next to a Provincial Wildlife Area outside of town.  "Hedgecraft" perfectly encompasses all aspects of  the work I do and the products I create.

At Hedgecraft Herbals I believe in making products which give the gift of herbal healing back to the people. I believe in making gentle, effective, sustainable products which are suitable for
the most vulnerable members of a family. Each product I make is my own creation, born of education, experience, and intuition, and is crafted by my own hands with love and a genuine desire for it to promote healing. We are each born with an innate ability to heal, and while modern medicine has a place, in the wise woman tradition we seek to nourish the body as a whole so that we can manifest our own healing. Hedgecraft Herbals products are intended to nourish and support those innate healing abilities we each possess.

I use only natural, and in most cases organic or wildcrafted, ingredients (keeping in mind that there is no such thing as organic minerals like dead sea salt, epsom salt, zinc oxide, volcanic ash, and bentonite clay).  Each product I make is rich and concentrated, with no additives, harsh preservatives, or cheap fluff fillers.
In the wise woman tradition we believe that  the whole is greater than the mere sum of parts and there is a power found in using the whole plant which is altered and even reduced, when you try to isolate out the 'active' or 'most powerful' components only.

If you have a known or suspected allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient/family, please do not use products which contain that ingredient.  If you are uncomfortable with the effects of a given product, or experience unwanted effects, please discontinue use and seek out appropriate care. If pre-existing conditions are present please use with caution and after proper research as to the appropriateness of the product for you. If concerns arise at any time, please consult with a trusted healthcare professional.

Please note also that these products are designed to nourish and support your body in its own innate healing process, to  promote an overall sense of well-being. They are not intended to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure diseases or conditions, and they have not been tested by any agency - federal or otherwise.
